Reflections on Naira-for-Crude | adekkatv

Image
By  abiodun KOMOLAFE Crude oil price rebound after China-US trade talks The Naira-for-Crude initiative has ignited a profound debate in Nigeria’s economic landscape, yielding tangible results, such as the consistent drop in petrol prices. It is a development warmly received by many citizens. Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s influence on petrol prices demonstrates its authority, even as it raises fundamental questions about the interplay between state power and economic dynamics. If successfully implemented, the initiative could foster economic stability, diminish foreign currency dependence, and redefine Nigeria’s economic trajectory. However, a pressing question lingers: should these price drops translate to a reduced cost of living? The main thing about the Naira-for-Crude initiative is that it was thought of at all. For that, the Bola Tinubu-led government, which thought of it, deserves immense credit for conceptualizing this initiative! Such is the low level of policy...

The underdevelopment of Ijebu-Jesa, my Native Nazareth (1) | adekkatv

Image
By abiodun KOMOLAFE I am an angry Nigerian! I am angry because Ijebu-Jesa, my hometown, is a town where the past and present intersect in a complex blend of tradition and modernity. The headquarters of Oriade Local Government in Osun State seems to be struggling to find its footing, and it is as if my Native Nazareth is stuck in a time warp where progress and stagnation coexist in an uneasy balance. The concept of ‘home’ in Ijebu-Jesa is a complex one. It’s a place of belonging, but also a site of struggle. The rich cultural heritage is still palpable, but the lack of development is a harsh reality. It’s a treasure trove of traditions and customs, but it’s also a reminder of the challenges of preserving the past while embracing the future. Perhaps, it’s time for the people to take matters into their own hands and demand real change. Ijebu-Jesa is another symptom of underdevelopment. Go to the city centre, famously known as ‘Inu Oja’, remove the ‘Iroko Oja’ that was removed in 197...

Image
Image Credit: Wikipedia  By Akinwale J. Faniyi BMLS, AMLSCN, FYALIWA, SSF (M&E), MAGES In hospitals and clinics across Nigeria, the Widal test remains a household name in the diagnosis of typhoid fever. For decades, this blood test has been the go-to tool for doctors faced with patients presenting with fever, headache, or gastrointestinal symptoms. Yet, despite its popularity, the Widal test continues to raise serious concerns among health professionals because, quite frankly, it often gets it wrong. In its current use, especially the common practice of testing only a single acute-phase blood sample, which is simply not reliable and frequently delivers false positives, mistaking other infections or past exposures for active typhoid fever. In truth, Salmonella , the bacteria that causes typhoid shares antigens with many other enterobacteriacae found in our environment and bodies. Add to that prior vaccinations, past infections, or co-existing illnesses like malaria or...
